unaccompanied by a parent. Teenagers are requested to finish using the club by 5p.m. In
addition to the membership, teens are encouraged to participate in group
Fitness classes
including BODYJAM®, BODYSTEP®, BODYPUMP®, BODYFLOW®,
BODYATTACK® and BODYCOMBAT®.
“Lifestyle Family
Fitness is committed to help fight teenage obesity,” said Geoff Dyer,
Lifestyle Family
Fitness CEO. “We are encouraged to see hundreds of teenagers taking
the initiative to get off the couches and into our clubs and look forward to helping instill a
love for
Fitness early in life through their experiences at Lifestyle Family
Fitness this
summer.”
Over the past decade, obesity rates among teenagers have skyrocketed. According to the
Center for Disease Control’s National
Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from
2003-2004, 17.4 percent of adolescents in the United States are considered obese. This
number has increased over 65% from just 10 years ago when only 10.5 percent of
teenagers were considered obese. Forty years ago, only 4.6 percent of teens were obese.
A teenager is considered obese when they reach the 95th percentile of the Body Mass
Index chart. The Body Mass Index combines height and weight to determine body mass.
It is compared to the BMI-for-age percentage, which evaluate the child’s BMI versus
other children the same age.
Overweight teenagers are more likely to become obese adults. In addition, they are at a
higher risk for diseases such as hypertension, diabetes and sleep apnea. The rise in
adolescent obesity can be linked to lifestyle habits including, increased portion sizes,
consuming sugary beverages, lack of exercise and increased television viewing and
gaming.
